In the Machform blog post for the release of Machform 5, the following statement was made:
Version Numbers Change
As of today (July 7th, 2017) we’ll be changing our version numbering to allow us release updates more often.
Previously, when we change the major version number (e.g from v3.x to v4.x) this means many of new features and updates. While the minor version number (e.g. from v4.7 to v4.8) indicate small changes or single new feature. The main drawback with this approach is when we need to release new major version, it will require significant amount of time (more than several months or even years), which we hate.
Now, we’re planning to release new updates more often (our goal is to have new update every 1-3 months). So, any new update that contain one or more features, it will change the major version number up (e.g v6, v7, v8). While any new update that contain only bugfixes, it will change the minor version number up (e.g v5.2, v5.3).
Confusing? Well, just ignore the above technical stuff. The most important point is you’ll get more updates every year!
However, the part about bug-fix-only releases being indicated with a "minor version number" isn't being followed, as far as I can see. There has already been at least one bug fix release of Machform 13 without any change to the minor version number, so the Machform version number should be at least 13.1. (And apparently a second bug-fix release - or at least a "workaround" release - is coming soon, which should be numbered 13.2 or higher.)
This is incredibly inconvenient for Machform users responsible for maintaining self-hosted installations of Machform. Instead of being able to check the Machform settings page for our installation to see the version number if we want to find out if we have installed the latest version (which takes a matter of seconds), we have to carefully read all blog posts and emails from Appnitro to see if any bug fix updates have been made and re-download and install the software and we still can't be sure if we have the latest version. Personally, I find this maddening!
Please, Appnitro, stick to the version numbering standards you said you would in that blog post. Thy are annoyingly non-standard, but at least you promised to indicate bug fixes in your version numbers. Please keep that promise!
