Voicing my agreement that this would be a good idea as well.
The global fields approach would be a much cleaner method. What if you got rid of that form? You'd also have to remember which form the "original" field was associated with every time a change was needed.

Great feature request. For instance, I ALWAYS need name, email and one or two other fields. If we could define them globally and their {merge tag} names (aka "field names") stayed consistent throughout, that would be fantastic!
